Follow-up on the Pippin sale

by Joe Spake on February 10, 2010

Last week I posted about the dismantling/demolition of the Zippin Pippin.  Jackson Baker wrote a story yesterday, Mulroy’s Salvage Mission Finally Succeeds: Green Bay to Get the Zippin’ Pippin in the Flyer. Apparently the deal is done to sell the Pippin to Green Bay for a park there, or maybe it’s just the “Concept” of the Pippin.  How would you interpret this excerpt from Baker’s piece?

“In practice, that means the name, the ride’s basic architecture and physical plan, and its historical association will be sold — with new boards and other materials to be supplied by the Wisconsin city.”

When I think of the Zippin Pippin, I think of the wooden structure, which defines its historical significance as the country’s second oldest roller coaster.  So what is Green Bay buying, physically?  Sounds like the City is buying the name and a set of plans.  So, I stand by my original assessment:  They are demolishing the Zippin Pippin.

I am in hopes they are only rebuilding the center section and dismantling the end curls for reassembly
  • I have heard they had to continue to replace the wood while it was working. Probably scrapping the wood. The article says Green Bay is supplying the wood.
